Drakenstein prison, formerly known as Victor Verster Prison is linked to the life and times of NELSON MANDELA. It is famous for being the prison where Nelson Mandela spent the last three of the 27 years he spent in prison. It was often used as a stepping stone for releasing lower-risk political prisoners. Out of these gates is where Nelson Mandela took his first steps to freedom.
